Barbara MacAdam
Barbara A. MacAdam is an editor, writer, and curator, who has long worked for ARTnews, where she is currently Editor at Large and was, until recently, co-executive editor, working for the print edition and the website. Along the way, she has done writing and editing stints at Art and Auction, New York Magazine, Review: Latin American Literature and Arts, the Paris Review, the Virginia Quarterly. She has written numerous catalogue essays and a book New York's New and Avant-Garde Art Galleries, under the name Barbara Stone (City & Company, 1999), including portraits of 50 galleries at the turn of the century.
Among the shows she curated is “Monumental Drawings” for Blue Star Art Center in San Antonio, Texas, in 2010, which was accompanied by a catalogue.
Her essays on art, literature, and design have appeared in the LA Times Book Review, Newsday, and the New York Times Book Review. She has done many of the other things art critics, editors, and journalists do, such as serving on panels, judging art competitions, and making studio visits. She serves on the board of the International Art Critics Association (AICA) and on the advisory committee of the Paris-based Arts Arena.
She is especially interested in abstraction, minimalism, conceptual art, and story-telling narratives, and enjoys collaborating with her husband, professor and art critic Alfred Mac Adam.
